Our partners in Russia recently took their Absolute Arm and Absolute Tracker systems to St Petersburg to scan a detailed scale model of the Smolny Convent of the Resurrection on Rastrelli Square, on the left bank of the River Neva. With the high-quality 3D scanning provided by the RS6 Laser Scanner and the Leica Absolute Scanner LAS, the complete model was digitised in short order despite the delicate nature of this large historic model with many hidden and hard-to-reach areas. This scanning project is an essential step in a wider project to finally complete Smolny Convent with a bell tower that was part of the original cathedral design but was never built. With a complete 3D scan of this contemporary scale model of the cathedral – which is currently stored in scientific-research museum of the Russian Academy of Arts – planners will be able to create new designs for the bell tower that will see it constructed exactly as the original architects intended.
