The IRB 800, the first 10-axis welding robot for large parts, from ABB France - Robotics Division
Wednesday, August 20, 2008Description :
To develop the new IRB 800 welding robot, ABB - Robotics Division combined the IRB 660 palletizing robot with the small IRB 140 handling and welding robot.

The configuration of the assembly offers a mechanical system with 10 axes able to answer the needs of automation of the welding processes for very large parts. This ABB innovation will also open new perspectives in applications other than welding.

The small welding robot is fixed on the flange of the wrist of the palletizing robot, which allows it to be brought with great precision into the area to be welded. The assembly thus constituted reaches a radius of action of 3.9 meters with a good repeatability of position of 0.09 mm.

The new welding robot has a smaller footprint than gantry systems. The accessibility to the equipment is also much better because no supporting foot does not interfere with the access. The IRB 800 also offers great integration flexibility because it can be combined with one or more part positioners. Note that the whole range of welding equipment is compatible with this robot.

In addition, the 4 axes of the palletizing robot make it possible to position the small robot in all possible configurations necessary for quality welding on a complex part.

Finally, and contrary to the majority of gantries, it is not necessary to carry out a specific civil engineering making the IRB 800 a more economical solution.

Based on standard robots, the IRB 800 system is both highly reliable and easy to use. All you need is a single IRC5 control cabinet and a single programming console to control and program the 10 axes that work in MultiMove.
