Eaton invests in a new testing laboratory in Montbonnot for the development of its inverters
Thursday, March 13, 2014Description :
The French research and development center at Eaton, based in Montbonnot near Grenoble, is equipped with a new test laboratory allowing the use of advanced techniques with the aim of validating the inverters developed on the site, including the line Interactive completely renewed in 2013.

The Grenoble region has long been recognized across borders to support the engineering sector and it concentrates a multitude of companies and research centers in various fields. Thus, the industrial area known as Inovallée is the first technopole on the French territory with the ambition to favor the links between research and industry. It is a technological park of 110 hectares which today federates 330 leading companies and 10 000 jobs in the heart of the alpine valleys and the basin of Grenoble.

Eaton has therefore relied on the know-how of local engineers and on this ground conducive to technological innovations to base its research and development center in this region.

Montbonnot housed a testing laboratory belonging to MGE Office Protection Systems, which already specialized in inverter design and later complemented Eaton's areas of expertise. Eaton has the particularity of owning its own research laboratories within it, which makes it a true manufacturer and distinguishes the company from its direct competitors.

Since the beginning of its operation by Eaton in 2008, the Montbonnot center has continuously brought structural improvements and technical innovations to its site in order to design advanced inverters for the international market. The site brings together about 150 employees dedicated to developing the best products on the market and using test laboratories to evolve their projects. Eaton has thus renewed and reinforced the equipment of the existing laboratory in order to carry out even more precise tests for the design of its inverters.

The new test data center extends over 600m² of premises and consists of several test areas. The tests carried out on Eaton inverters concern, for example, the power, thermal or acoustic performance of the products, their electromagnetic compatibility or their safety against users. Engineers can now perform even more accurate product validation tests under different thermal and humidity conditions, or various emission tests to verify compliance, supplemented by regulatory tests for CE marking, The various standards in progress, but also tests of internal specifications. Finally, tests are also carried out to validate the good communication between inverters and computers hosting different operating systems, including Windows, Linux or UNIX.

Eaton's R & D center in Montbonnot was able to fully renew Eaton's Line Interactive inverter line in 2013 to meet the needs of all IT infrastructures, regardless of their size. The 5SC, compact, intuitive and ideal for protecting small business servers is the latest addition to the Line Interactive line of inverters. Also belonging to this range, the Ellipse PRO from 650 to 1600VA is dedicated to the protection of PCs and workstations with maximum energy saving. The 5S 550 to 1500VA is designed for the protection of point-of-sale terminals, PCs and workstations. The 5P from 650 to 1550VA is ideal for protecting small servers & active equipments and finally the 5PX from 1500 to 3000VA is dedicated to the protection of critical servers and storage equipments.

The Line Interactive line, like the other Eaton ranges, uses the Eaton's Intelligent Power Software Suite, which features features unique to the electrical protection market. It is the only complete solution dedicated to the supervision and protection of a modern IT infrastructure around high density virtualization and storage.

Line Interactive inverters regulate the input voltage over a wide enough range to prevent the inverter from passing too often on a battery when the power grid is unstable, the topology necessary for IT installations.

One of the highlights of the range is that this software suite can be installed on any Eaton inverter equipped with a network card, thus meeting the needs of all users.

Eaton EMEA commented: "With this new laboratory, Eaton wanted to invest in research and development at the Montbonnot site, which designs our most advanced inverter ranges, including the unique Line Interactive line market. This laboratory enables our teams to carry out a series of tests with the aim of developing ever more innovative and high quality products to satisfy the needs of our users. "
