Spindle expansion sensor
Wednesday, April 1, 2015Description :
In order to minimize position errors in a machine tool, this new sensor based on the eddy current principle can measure the thermal expansion of the high-frequency pins.

As the core of the machine tool, the spindle plays a decisive role in terms of dimensional stability and surface quality of the workpiece. The high rotational speeds and the heat generated cause the axial expansion of the tool spindle and consequently the position error during the processing of the workpiece.

The new eddyNCDT SGS 4701 Eddy Current Sensor detects the thermal expansion due to the centrifugal force of the high-frequency pins through a measurement on the labyrinth seal. The measured values ??are transmitted as a defined offset to the CNC control and compensate for the position error.

Models of miniature sensors with dimensions of 4.5 x 10 x 12 mm³ or 4 x 4 x 10 mm³ can be integrated into the tool spindle in combination with the controller.

To simplify handling and achieve maximum accuracy, the eddyNCDT SGS 4701 is factory calibrated on the customer's ferromagnetic or non-ferromagnetic materials. For temperature compensation of the eddyNCDT sensor SGS 4701, the temperature of the sensor is captured via the resistance of the eddy current coil. This signal is also made available to the customer enabling it to renounce possibly additional temperature sensors. Thanks to the mounting compatibility with the previous model, it is possible to retrofit the new sensor at any time with ease.
